Resumes or CV’s show a person’s skill set. However, that is but one aspect of what makes someone tick and is not enough to determine if an employee would be a good fit for your company.
If you’ve got time and want a better approach, try to dig deep into their life experiences. Getting to know these will tell you more about the person’s drive, grit, and motivation.
Remember, the best resume doesn’t always equate to the best fit.
Listen To Your Gut
There’s a reason why we humans evolved with strong gut instincts. As with dating, you have to find someone with the right “spark” (i.e., someone who would be a good fit for your company).
Hence, if you feel that a candidate isn’t a match with your company regardless of how he seems to be otherwise, go with your gut.
Know Their “Why”
People apply for a job for various reasons. However, it usually boils down to two things: paycheck and/or passion.
Before you hire a potential rockstar, gently probe them during the interview. Are they interested because of the sizable paycheck? Or are they more interested in how the role can help them grow?
If it’s more of the latter, that’s a green flag right there. (But bear in mind that you should offer proper compensation regardless.)
Size Up Their Potential for Growth
Happy employees are more likely to make a great difference in your company.
But how can you tell if they’ll be happy at your company? First, you have to identify what excites them. Get to know their interests. If these are in line with or are compatible with your company, it could be a potential win-win situation.
Most of all, find someone who can grow in their position at your company.
Prioritise a Thirst for Knowledge
Speaking of growth, keep an eye out for candidates who are always open to learning new skills.
Ask applicants if they are willing to take on additional training within the scope of their role. Those who love to learn and have a genuine thirst for knowledge are more likely to take ownership over their job – and go the extra mile to keep getting better at it.
Furthermore, they can inspire those around them to take responsibility for their personal and professional development.
Take Care of Your In-House Employees
While it’s true that there are rockstars out there, don’t neglect the ones that could already be under your nose. I’m talking about recruiting – or promoting- in-house.
If you have a rockstar employee who wants to explore another role in a different department, encourage them to do just that.
This way, you won’t need to start from scratch when you train them. More importantly, doing so sends a clear message that you value and trust in the potential of those who already work for you.
Once You Find Your Rock Stars, Treat Them Well
Finding rockstar employees is one thing. Holding onto them is another.
If you truly want to cultivate a successful organisation, always treat your team members as well as you do your customers.
Happy staff are more likely to provide great customer service. And in return, happy customers are more likely to patronise and promote your products and services.
When Hiring, Choose Enthusiasm Over Skill
If you have to choose between the two, that is.
Enthusiastic people are often innovative and proactive. They have a positive outlook on life and work. They are also more likely to find ways to resolve issues proactively, without raising a stink over these.
People can learn skills. But you can’t transform a complainer into a problem solver.
